The Bagel Family's Easy Shepherd's Pie

I'm very lucky because Tyler's favourite food in the whole world is Shepherd's Pie which is just about the easiest dish. I've messed up a lot of dishes, but you cannot screw this one up, and it's cheap. For about $15 you can easily feed 4 hungry people and still have some leftovers.

With just a handful of ingredients, you can easily make this in about 1-1.5 hours.

Ingredient checklist:

  • Potatoes (2 lbs, about 4-5 medium sized ones) - I usually use Russet
  • Garlic (3 cloves)
  • Onion (1 medium sized)
  • Ground beef (2lbs or about 1 kg)
  • Peas and carrots (frozen or from can, 1 cup or 1 can)
  • Butter (2 tablespoons)
  • Milk (1 cup)
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper
  • Vegetable / Olive Oil
  • Optional: Cheddar cheese (1 cup or however much you want, and shredded)
  • Optional: Flour (2 tbsp)
  • Other optional: Other veggies, steak spice, dried dill, dried parsley

Broken down actions:
  1. Cook the Potatoes
  2. Preheat oven to 375F
  3. Set a large pot of water  about half - 3/4 full on high to boil
  4. Wash the potatoes of any dirt stuck on to it and add into the pot to cook. They should take about 15 minutes to cook.
  5. While potatoes are in the pot, you can work on the other ingredients.
  6. Prep the meat and filling
  7. Mince the garlic. Dice the onions (and other veggies if desired). If using a can of veggies, open and drain the can of the excess water
  8. Heat a large pan on medium, and add a bit of oil.
  9. Add garlic, onions, and veggies to the pan and mix until the onions become a bit translucent and you can start smelling the garlic. Then add the beef.
  10. Cook until meat is browned. Then turn off the heat and drain the pan of the excess fat.
  11. At this point, add a little bit of steak spice, salt and pepper all around the pan and mix.
  12. Then, douse that pan with Worcestershire Sauce! I don't know why every recipe will say like "1 tablespoon of Worcestershire". That is not enough to appease the husband. Just shake the bottle all around the pan until the meat looks well covered and mix well into the beef.
  13. If the beef looks a bit too watery, sprinkle a tablespoon or so of flour over and mix into the beef to thicken the sauce.
  14. Mash the Potatoes
  15. Back to the potatoes, check on the potatoes by piercing them with a fork. If the fork goes into the middle easily, then they are ready to be taken out. If not, continue letting them boil.
  16. When the potatoes are ready, transfer them into a mixing bowl and drain the pot water.
  17. Then using a hand blender or potato masher, slowly mix in the milk into the potatoes to break up the potatoes. If the potatoes are too dry and spitting up everywhere, add a bit more milk and butter until the potatoes are smooth and creamy.
  18. Mix in salt, pepper, dill (so good), and other spices you desire to the potatoes
  19. Combine
  20. Transfer the beef into a casserole dish, and spread the mashed potatoes evenly over top
  21. Sprinkle cheese on top if desired (for us, it's always desired)
  22. Place into the oven for about 20 minutes to heat through
  23. Finishing Touches
  24. Then, turn the oven to broil for about 5 minutes or until slightly browned to get a nice pretty look on top.
  25. Enjoy!!!
